bouldering's hard

I went yesterday to bull creek with sandy. Afterwards I felt like a no talent retard. I completed a few routes, three to be exact. I did each one 3 or four times. Gradually getting easier as the day went on. Geez... I was about ready to call the trip off after yesterday. But I stopped at whole earth on the way home to price some aluminum water bottles I read about, and I found a beta book on austin rock. Apparantly, I did 2 V0, a V1, and a V3. To be quite honest, I don't think the V3 is rated correctly, because the hardest one out there is a V7, and I couldn't get up that thing with a ladder and trampoline. After reading it though, I found out that I got half way up some pretty gnarly stuff. One route used to be termed austins hardest route, but that was probably 60 years ago. Anyway, this book had tons of stuff to climb. I think im gonna be busy after I get out of school. Because honestly, I don't think Im quite ready for 2 pitches yet.

Rad. i haven't been on real rock in a long time. Ratings are really subjective creatures... it's all about how hard it felt to the person that climbed it. From climbing the last coupla' years on three or four different routesetters' routes at the gym, i can say v3 ranges from "That was pretty hard, but i could do it tired," to "Maybe if i just had another arm and a grappling hook..." So 3-- even when applied by the pros-- gets used on stuff from around v2 to easyish v4. v3 corresponds to about mid-5.11 to easy 5.12 on a rope. A lotta times when a route makes it into a guidebook a whole buncha people have done it and've confirmed it, but then there are lots of crags that're definitely softer or definitely harder on grades than the average. but if you did something that's rated 3 in a guidebook, take it and flaunt it: that's a hard climb if you haven't been on rock a whole bunch, and it's the rating ceiling for most mortals that don't climb all the time. And even if it's a soft 3, or would'a been a 2 somewhere else, that's still some dang hard pulling for not having been on rock much. Go hunt down all the other 3s at the crag and see how they compare. That's awesome. You are my new hero.

Hey mate,

Glenn and i've decided to join a clan and compete in highlands games. You in? You get to wear a kilt, and there's apparently good beer involved.
